US and Nigeria – The United States and Nigerian governments have stepped up coordinated military operations against ISIS militants operating in northeastern Nigeria, marking a significant escalation in counterterrorism efforts across the Lake Chad region.
According to reports, the latest wave of operations involved additional airstrikes launched by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) on May 18, 2026, targeting ISIS strongholds and operational bases linked to the extremist group’s regional network.
Joint Operations Target ISIS Infrastructure
Security sources say the renewed offensive has resulted in the neutralization of approximately 175 militants while also dismantling key financial and logistical structures supporting ISIS activities in northeastern Nigeria.

The operations are part of an ongoing security collaboration between the Nigerian military and the United States aimed at weakening insurgent capabilities, disrupting recruitment channels, and cutting off supply routes used by extremist fighters.
Military analysts believe the intensified campaign reflects growing international concern over the resurgence of ISIS-linked groups in West Africa, particularly in areas surrounding the Lake Chad Basin.
Trump Announces Elimination of Senior ISIS Leader
US President Donald Trump also confirmed that an earlier operation conducted in Nigeria successfully eliminated ISIS’s global second-in-command, describing the mission as a major breakthrough in the global fight against terrorism.
The announcement has drawn international attention to Nigeria’s strategic role in counterterrorism operations across Africa, especially as insurgent groups continue to pose security threats in parts of the continent.
Nigeria’s Ongoing Fight Against Extremism
Nigeria has battled insurgency in its northeastern region for over a decade, with extremist groups carrying out attacks on civilians, security forces, and infrastructure.
The government has increasingly relied on regional and international partnerships to strengthen surveillance, intelligence sharing, and military response capabilities. The latest US-Nigeria operations signal a renewed commitment to dismantling ISIS networks and restoring stability in affected communities.
