Togo has officially become the sixth African nation to grant visa-free entry to all holders of African passports, with the new policy taking effect on May 18, 2026.
The move positions the West African state among a growing group of African countries pushing for stronger continental integration through easier cross-border travel. Other nations that already offer full or near-full visa-free access to African travelers include Rwanda, Ghana, Benin, The Gambia, and Seychelles.
Togo Expands Visa-Free Travel Policy Across Africa
The Togolese government says the decision is designed to strengthen pan-African cooperation, increase trade opportunities, attract tourism, and reinforce the country’s ambition of becoming a major regional business and transport hub in West Africa.
The policy aligns with broader African Union goals aimed at improving mobility across the continent and accelerating economic integration under initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Easier movement of people is widely viewed as a critical step toward boosting intra-African commerce and investment.
What African Travelers Need to Know
Although visas will no longer be required for African passport holders entering Togo, travelers must still comply with existing immigration procedures. Authorities confirmed that visitors will be required to complete an online pre-arrival declaration before traveling.
Travelers must also continue to satisfy health, security, and border control requirements set by the Togolese authorities. Officials say the measures are intended to maintain national security while simplifying travel access for African citizens.
