United Nations: African Academy for Women in Political Leadership

United Nations – A new African Academy for Women in Political Leadership has officially launched with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

United Nations – A new African Academy for Women in Political Leadership has officially launched with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aiming to empower and prepare the next generation of female political leaders across the continent.

The initiative is designed to provide mentorship, leadership training, governance education, and strategic policy development skills for emerging women leaders from different African countries. Organisers say the programme seeks to address the persistent underrepresentation of women in political decision-making across Africa.

Despite progress in several nations, women remain significantly underrepresented in parliament, cabinet positions, and senior government institutions throughout much of the continent.

Advocacy groups argue that limited access to political financing, weak institutional support, and cultural barriers continue to restrict women’s participation in governance. The academy is expected to bring together young politicians, activists, civil society leaders, and professionals interested in public leadership. Participants will receive training in diplomacy, public policy, negotiation, political communication, and democratic governance.

Supporters say the programme could play an important role in strengthening inclusive leadership and encouraging more women to enter politics. International organisations have increasingly emphasized the connection between gender inclusion and democratic development.

Political analysts note that Africa’s rapidly growing youth population makes leadership transition and political inclusion more urgent than ever. Women and young people together represent the majority of the continent’s population, yet both groups remain underrepresented in many leadership structures.

Growing Women Empowerment Initiatives

The initiative also reflects growing continental momentum around women’s empowerment and leadership visibility. Countries such as Rwanda, Tanzania, Namibia, and South Africa have made notable progress in female political representation, though challenges remain in many regions.

Organisers believe the academy will help create stronger networks among African women leaders while building long-term institutional support systems for political participation. For many advocates, the launch of the academy is more than a training programme.

It represents an investment in the future of African governance and a recognition that inclusive leadership is increasingly essential for sustainable political and economic development across the continent.
