Sahel Becomes New Arena for U.S.–Russia Strategic Competition

Sahel Region – The geopolitical contest between the United States and Russia is deepening across Africa’s Sahel region

Sahel Region – The geopolitical contest between the United States and Russia is deepening across Africa’s Sahel region as both powers expand their security footprints amid growing instability and shifting alliances.

Russia has strengthened its presence in Mali with the delivery of a major naval-backed arms shipment aimed at supporting the country’s military operations against armed militant groups.

The move comes as Moscow, through the Africa Corps, continues to broaden its role in the region, providing military equipment, training, and direct combat support to governments that have increasingly distanced themselves from traditional Western partners.

Meanwhile, the United States has announced a $2.3 million security assistance package for Niger focused on enhancing border security and counterterrorism capabilities.

Washington says the support is intended to help regional authorities address cross-border threats and improve stability in one of Africa’s most volatile security corridors.

The parallel initiatives highlight a growing struggle for influence in the Sahel, where security challenges, political transitions, and changing diplomatic relationships are reshaping the region’s international partnerships.

As governments seek new allies to confront insurgencies and safeguard national sovereignty, the Sahel is emerging as a critical front in the broader competition between global powers.
