Cameroon: Green Farmers Cooperative Credit Union

Cameroon lol agribusiness sector is entering a new phase with the official launch of the Green Farmers Cooperative Credit Union, an initiative led by Roland Fomundam.

At the center of the initiative is the Green Farmers Finance™ model, described as a Closed-Loop Agricultural Finance System™ — an integrated approach that combines financing, monitoring, production support, and market access within a single ecosystem.

A Shift From Traditional Agricultural Lending

Unlike conventional agricultural finance systems that rely heavily on collateral, the model provides collateral-free financing to farmers. In return, participating farmers grant the cooperative access to monitor farm activities using satellite technology, ensuring adherence to production standards and improving yield outcomes.

The system also introduces a guaranteed buy-back mechanism, allowing farmers to repay loans through harvested produce rather than direct cash payments — a structure designed to reduce default risk while stabilizing farmer income.

Building a Controlled Agricultural Value Chain

The initiative goes beyond financing by positioning the cooperative as a central aggregator of agricultural produce. Through this model:

  • Produce can be stored and sold strategically based on market conditions
  • A portion of output can be processed for value addition
  • The system can meet large-scale supply demands across local, regional, and international markets

This vertically integrated structure reflects a broader ambition to formalize and strengthen Cameroon’s agricultural value chains, while improving efficiency and profitability across the sector.

Implications for Cameroon’s Agribusiness Sector

The launch signals a growing shift toward data-driven, system-controlled agriculture in Cameroon — where financing, production, and distribution are increasingly interconnected.

If successfully scaled, the model could:

  • Expand financial access for smallholder farmers
  • Improve production consistency
  • Strengthen Cameroon’s position in regional and global agricultural markets

Looking Ahead

With membership now open, the Green Farmers Cooperative Credit Union is positioning itself as a potential catalyst for structural transformation in Cameroon’s agribusiness ecosystem.
